Looks Can Be Deceiving

A wall was left to dry without proper mitigation after a water loss, which made conditions right for mold spore colonization.
Is there visible mold? That's a question asked every day in the restoration business. Many times the answer is no, but there is always a chance when water went where it wasn't supposed to be. Addressing water issues quickly is the best way to minimize the chances of mold spreading. When walls are left to dry on their own, mold spores can quickly colonize in places that cannot be seen by the naked eye. Inside the walls, mold can deteriorate dry wall and studs, as well as insulation.
Mold can also be found on the back of vinyl wallcoverings, or wallpaper. The wallpaper can act as a vapor barrier over a wet wall, and in conjunction with the sticky adhesives used to hang it, it can be the perfect environment for mold to grow.
Any suspected out of sight mold should be investigated by trained professionals, such as the technicians at SERVPRO of Brandon!

"What Does Mold Look Like?"
The first thing to know is that there is active and inactive mold. Well, active mold growth is either slimy or fuzzy. The color of mold is usually green, black, orange or purple. On the other hand, inactive mold is dry and powdery and may be white.
The early stages of mold can look like a fine web, whereas mold in full bloom looks bushy. Mold spores spread really easily.
“Preventing Mold”
In the south we are at a disadvantage because of our humidity, but mold cannot grow when the humidity and temperature is lowered. On a day when the humidity is low, open your windows. If not, use air conditioning and dehumidifiers (empty humidifiers often).
Here at SERVPRO of Brandon we specialize in the mold remediation, along with fire, bio cleanup and water. We are here to help just call us today 601-829-2162 if you need our services or just have questions, we are available 24/7.

Moisture can come from many sources. Even wet or damp clothing can be a water source. Homeowners sometimes find that their closets become a source of mold and mildew.
Here are a few tips to prevent mold in your closet.
- Be sure any clothes, linens or towels are completely clean and dry before storing them.
- Leave space around stored clothing allows more air to circulate. Do not pack clothes too tightly.
- Leave the closet door open when possible.
- Wire shelving provides greater air circulation than solid shelves.
- Keep your items off the floor to keep moisture from appearing underneath them. Hang the clothes or keep them in boxes.
- Air out your closets occasionally by clearing them out and washing any clothing.
- Do not keep your dry-cleaning in plastic bags. Their polyethylene composition traps humidity around fibers, and the dampness encourages mold growth.
- Leave the light on - Install an energy-efficient light in the closet. Remember mold needs moisture to live, so the warmth from a low wattage light bulb can help keep the closet dry.
- Don’t ignore a musty smell; it can only mean one thing, mold is growing somewhere and it has to be taken care of. This is when you need to call for a certified mold remediation contractor.
Here at SERVPRO of Brandon, we have the experience, knowledge, and expertise necessary to help you with any mold damage or preventive practices. We are also available for cleanup after fire and water damage. Call us today at 601-829-2162

In Brandon, MS mold can spread through a home in as little as 48 hours.
Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all molds from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.
- Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
- Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
- Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent. Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed and removed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
