The Mighty Toilet

Most of us don’t even think about the toilets in our homes and businesses until it’s time to clean it, or worse, there’s a problem. Toilets definitely don’t get the appreciation they deserve, considering the previous alternatives. Before toilets, communal outhouses, chamber pots, holes in the ground, and many other disgusting ideas (let’s not mention castle “garderobes”), were all humans had to turn to. In 1596, Sir John Harington, a godson of Queen Elizabeth I and an English courtier, wrote of a “2-foot oval bowl fed by water from an upstairs cistern”. Alexander Cumming applied for the first flush toilet patent in 1775, and invented the S-shaped pipe underneath the toilet to keep out odors and gases from the sewer. A year later Thomas Crapper built onto that idea, and invented the ballcock( toilet fill valve) to add to his line.
